What is AA, really?

Alcoholics Anonymous is a free, worldwide fellowship of people who help each other stay sober. It's built around the Twelve Steps โ€” a spiritual (not religious) framework โ€” regular meetings, and sponsorship, where someone further along in recovery walks alongside a newcomer. There are no dues, no fees, and the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.

What's a meeting actually like?

Less intimidating than most people fear. Meetings are usually an hour. Some are "open" (anyone can attend, including family and curious newcomers) and some are "closed" (for people who want to stop drinking). People share their experience out loud, or simply listen โ€” you never have to speak. You can walk in, sit in the back, and leave without saying a word. That's completely normal.

  • Open meetings: good for a first look, or for family members who want to understand.
  • Closed meetings: for those working on their own drinking.
  • Speaker, discussion, and Big Book formats vary โ€” try a few before you decide it's "not for you."

Who AA helps โ€” and where coaching fits

AA works, and it works for a lot of people. For others, the spiritual language or the format doesn't click โ€” and that's not a moral failing. Here's the thing I say a lot: everything you've been taught is valid, and there's more. AA and coaching aren't rivals. Plenty of the people I work with go to meetings and work with me โ€” the meeting gives them a room full of people who get it, and coaching works on the identity, decisions, and family dynamics that a meeting doesn't cover one-on-one.

If AA hasn't fit: you still have real options โ€” SMART Recovery, Recovery Dharma, LifeRing, Women for Sobriety, medication-assisted treatment, and more. See the full guide to alternatives โ†’
